Impact of Packaging on Consumer Behaviour
It should build a customer's confidence by telling the true story of the product. The package should establish its own identity appropriate to the product and terms of the user's expectations. In other words, it should provide a distinct personality and status to the product.
It should have repacked or resale value. The package should be economical in relation to the value of the product. The packaging is an important marketing tool particularly for consumer products such as cosmetics, chocolates, toffees, and gift articles. Packaging refers to wrapping, compressing, filling or creating or putting the product in bags, bottles, cans, and barrels or placing them in suitable packets. The packaging is considered important due to the following reasons :
1. It ensures better standards of health and sanitation, as it is a means of product production. It protects the product from spoilage, leakage, pilferage, climate effect, etc. A good package also protects the goods from damage and deterioration during transportation, storage, and use.
2. It is a self-promoting tool for advertisement. An increasing number of products are sold on a self-service basis and most of the purchases are done on an impulsive basis. Therefore, an effective package performs many tasks like attracting attention, describing the features of the product, creating consumer confidence and making a favorable impression about the product.
3. Packaging the product in different sizes helps the consumer to purchase the product, as per their requirements and needs. Moreover, different shapes of packaging make it convenient to open, handle and use the products.
4. Packaging contributes to instant recognition of the company or brand. It is a means of creating a product identity and differentiation. Packaging facilitates the branding of a product. The brand name and mark can be easily printed on the package. The package creates uniqueness and prestige for the products.
5. It helps in standardizing the product and make it marketable by breaking them into small tradable lots.
6. It helps to identify the product by indicating nature and content. By sealing the package, a producer can save the customers from the spurious product.
7. It reduces the cost of transportation and storage and widens the market because properly packaged require less space.
8. The package often has reuse and resale value for the customer.
9. Packaging helps to increase sales and obtain a high price. A package has a competitive and growing use of open display and self-service of goods. To realize the foregoing benefits, the package must be designed carefully.
